Hey, would you look at that. It’s Halloween. It’s been hard to get into the spirit of things this year what with the way the  world is, where real life horror is on display daily diminishing any manufactured horror cheers and celluloid gorefests I typically enjoy this time of year so sorry, today’s Halloween post isn’t keeping with the spirit of the day. I guess you could make a case that it is. Zuul being from the first Ghostbusters flick (you know, those costumes those kids wear in the new Stranger Things) and that movie having ghosts and dead things in it is very Halloween, but that’s not why I picked it. I picked it today because Zuul fucking rules and I just acquired their second and final album on CD.

Having nothing to do with said movie and all to do with fucking rocking your ass off, Zuul dwells in the traditional, raw power side of metal, embracing the full on nature of and presence of the genre. This is melody driven, riff heavy, sing along ready metal music with heart and gusto. I like to think of this band, and fellow contemporaries Dawnbringer (who went on to start High Spirits, another traditional inspired rock n roll, heavy metal act with members of Zuul) as the forbearers of this traditional metal resurgence/genre but instead of just trying to recapture the spirit of those early metal bands, Zuul actually made something that embodies that sound but is new and fresh as well, incorporating heavy riffing, more direct songwriting, and some slight genre embellishments like a doom flourish here and there.

Then in 2015 they called it quits, right before a million homage traditional heavy metal bands came springing from the dirt, never fully getting the attention they truly deserve.

Did I say Zuul fucking rules? Well they do so on this Halloween treat yourself to some amazing metal music. See what I did there? Treat? Yeah? Oh, fuck you. Here’s some awesome:
