This week  was a little slower in general but it did produce a handful and solid, and sometimes fun new metal albums. Nothing here that’s going to change the world but man oh man was it a fun week. I’ve got little else to say so let’s get to the new music…

NEW STUFF: (Clink them title links, suckers)

Somnium Nox – Terra Inanis
Australian atmospheric black metal that’s a little more progressive, maybe, than what you’d think of typical atmospheric black metal. Maybe more dissonant death metal? It’s a pummeling experience for atmospheric black metal, albeit, a bit forgettable.

Wode – Servants of the Countercosmos
Wode’s debut from last year kicked me right in the teeth with their somewhat orthodox but forward thinking black metal. Slightly atmospheric but mostly forceful. Surprisingly I discovered they had a new album out and immediately bought it. What I got was a more direct, more edited version of the debut. Just blasting into melodic, furious, riff heavy black metal that wraps up all in about 30 minutes. Just about half the length of the debut. But it still packs a wallop and is some damn good, sinister, straight forward black metal that doesn’t feel archaic or like another throwback.

Danzig – Black Laden Crown
Check out my full review of this one over at Kvlt of Brewtality.

Alestorm – No Grave But The Sea
It’s Alestorm. What else can I say? If you like their pirate themed gimmick this album is right up your alley. There’s no exploration or experimenting, just catchy as fuck, stupid silly songs and theatrics from a band that pretends to be nothing more than fun. Alestorm loves taking the piss out of the overly staunch metal community and every now and then that levity is not only refreshing but required. Good, simple, stupid fun.

Rhapsody of Fire – The Legendary Years
Rhapsody of Fire, what they’ve been know as for years now since Luca Turilli went his separate way, decided that since they have changed members a billion times and got a new singer that they’d re-record a ton of their classic songs from the first five Rhapsody albums and I’m left sitting here wondering, ”why?” You won’t find a better guitar player than Luca and those songs are already damn good. Well, they did it anyways and it’s not that bad. I think the band is sorely lacking without Luca and have for years but occasionally they reach their previous glory and this is one of those moments, even if it is only because, like I said, all these songs were awesome in the first place, making this more of a best of album with new members. Good listening if you just want “the hits” or a good dose of cheesy, Italian symphonic power metal glory.
