Holy Fuck, it’s April! The metal continues, unabated by any worldly bullshit or nonsense. Here’s some killer new stuff from that past two weeks. That’s right, double metal post! You lucky mother fuckers.

NEW STUFF: (Click them titles)

The Sarcophagus – Beyond This World’s Illusion
This was a nice surprise. Fairly straight forward black metal with some classic acoustic guitar thrown in here and there and an overwhelming infectious melody and speed. One of Turkey’s earliest black metal bands, they haven’t been to prolific over the years but this new one is a rip roaring black metal good time.

Ravenous – Eternal Hunger EP
Fucking righteous, powerful, battle ready power metal. I haven’t heard this kind of engaging, epic straight forward power metal that got me this amped since Noble Beast and Visigoth. Hoping they pull it off when they release a full-length.

Windswept – The Great Cold Steppe
Windswept is another side project by Drudkh composer Roman Saenko, along with a couple more Drudkh members. This is like a more sinister and furious version of Drudkh. It’s still fairly atmospheric, but less folkish. A lot less folkish. More straight forward black metal with some intense riffing. Pretty fucking good and pretty damn fun overall.

Morast – Ancestral Void
Nasty, filthy, dismal, German, doomed up death metal. Maybe favorable to the death metal side a bit more, but righteously heavy.

Firewind – Immortals
Firewind has always been a sort of middle of the road power metal band. Sure they had some more accomplished albums but they’ve been sort of lack luster for the past couple. This one, however, finds the band with some renewed energy and song writing chops. It’s no classic but it’s some damn fine power metal, with mid cheese levels going strong.

Bloodbound – War of Dragons
I’d honestly given up on Bloodbound years ago and was surprised to see this one getting such a good response. While they’ve sort of switched gears from their more Manowar straight forward cheesy power metal style, they’ve kept some of that drive and and put it towards a different kind of cheesy power metal style: A more symphonic, Edguy approach. Like if Edguy was edgier. Take that anyway you want. I enjoy their power metal enthusiam. Anyways this one is fucking solid power metal fun and a welcomed return for Bloodbound.

Diabolical Messiah – Demonic Weapons Against the Sacred
My god this thing is just a fucking battering ram of unrelenting fury. Sickeningly nasty, unrelenting death metal from Chile that fucking punches you in the back of the head for 26 minutes then leaves you wondering what the fuck just happened. So much awesome here.

Buioingola – Il nuovo mare
Weird and experimental Italian black/post/ambient metal. Probably needs a couple more listens as it’s rather dense and dismal but I liked what I heard the first spin through.

Falls of Rauros – Vigilance Perennial
Without a doubt, Falls of Rauros are one of the best black metal bands happening right now. I’d call them atmospheric black metal but I think that limits them too much and the scope of their music is so broad and epic it’s almost impossible to contain to a genre label. Suffice to say this new album is Falls doing what they do to perfect measure. Epic, sweeping, classical, atmospheric, folk tinged black metal perfect. I fucking love this band and right now, as of April, this is the best album of the year. By a fucking mile.

Dread Sovereign – For Doom the Bell Tolls
How can you not give it up for a title like “For Doom the Bell Tolls?” You can’t not. Especially after discovering that this band is made up of Alan Averill, the singer from fucking Primordial, and members of Altar of Plagues, doing their very best classic doom metal homage in the vein of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus. Yeah, fucking awesome.

Vanum – Burning Arrow
It’s hard not to pass this band up when it consists of two members that do or have done duty in Fell Voices, Vorde, Yellow Eyes, Ash Borer, and Predatory Light, bands that were crucial in framing and forming an American black metal style. Vanum, however, is more traditional or straightforward black metal. Melodic and furious and unquestionably black metal.

Azarath – In Extremis
Azarath’s previous album Blasphemers’ Maledictions is one of the most insanely brutal and furious death metal albums of recent memory and it was always going to be hard for the band to top that. They sure do give it a fucking go this time around. I’m finding this band always delivers and while no, this might not be as good as Maledictions it’s no fucking slouch.

Royal Thunder – Wick
With their two previous releases Royal Thunder has proven to me that whenever they put something new out it’ll be worth a listen. This metal adjacent band keeps writing just top notch songs with a bluesy, doom-ish swagger, killer riffs, and damn does Miny Parsonz voice just keep getting better and better. Great band.

Extremity – Extremely Fucking Dead EP
I figured this would at leas be fun considering it’s made up of members of Vastum, VHOL, and Cretin/Repulsion, and I was right. Solid take on old school death metal, even though this style is starting to bore me.

The Crawling – Anatomy of Loss
This band lists their influences as Entombed, Bolt Thrower, and My Dying Bride and that’s exactly what they sound like, though I’d throw in some Now, Diabolical Satyricon as well. Take that however you like. Pounding, melodic, thumping, doom-ish death metal. When it’s good it’s damn good, but there are lows as well as highs. Not bad their first album.

Asira – Efference
I’m a sucker for this post “black gaze” style even though I find a lot it to be very similar. That ethereal, airy sound these bands get just captivates me so. That being said, Asira seem to be channeling black(er) metal era Alcest with a flavor of prog-ier Opeth and a dash of ethereal Devin Townsend. It works fairly well and the album is a true treat for the ears, if it’s not a everyday kind of album.
