The year is winding down and so are the new metal releases. Now is the the time of year where I’m more focussed on scouring over everybody’s best of lists to discover albums I missed throughout the year as well as focussing on my own personal best of 2016 list. I drive myself slightly crazy making these lists but I have a fucking blast putting them together, discussing with friends all of our picks and just getting crazy about metal.

There’s still some newer stuff coming out I’m interested in so let’s get to it:

NEW STUFF (Click the god damn titles):

Eneferens – In the Hours Beneath
I was rather taken with this bands EP from just a couple months ago so naturally this new full-length caught my eye, and yes, it’s just as good, probably better. It’s a beautiful mixture of a lot of styles but mostly it’s atmospheric black metal, but with a Katatonia dreariness too it. Not depressing dreariness but more like respect and awe for the natural world in all its form. Beautiful album.

Lydia Loveless – Real
One of my favorite non-metal discovers of the past couple years, Lydia Loveless’s combination of indie song writing, down to earth lyrics, and that country tinged voice hit all my singer/songwriter love buttons.

Ravencult – Force of Profanation
Nasty, Greek, black thrash. Straight for the throat, furious, hateful, and totally awesome. Reminds me of the nastiness of Horned Almighty, but not quite as hateful.

Gherzen – 1917
Fantastically melodic and captivating Russian atmospheric black metal from the members of Elderwind. Lots of big open sound and beautiful melody.

G.L.O.S.S. – Trans Day of Revenge
if ever there was a band that burned up rather than fade away, it’s G.L.O.S.S. Making waves with their no bullshit, in your face, DIY punk rock ferocity, they released one demo last year and this EP, both together totally about 16 minutes worth of music. After they declined an offer from Epitaph Records, the band decided to call it quits and leave us with these scant few minutes of punk rock glory.

Rebel Wizard – Triumph of Gloom
Like an awesome mix of old thrash/speed metal with a black metal topping. Not black thrash, it’s more like nasty, Teutonic thrash with black metal vocals. It’s hard to describe but I don’t feel like it actually falls into the black thrash genre. Whatever it is, it’s fucking killer.

Will Varley – Kingsdown Sundown
Just some well composed, well written, singer/songwriter stuff that I’m a sucker for. His voice reminds me of somebody but I just can’t place it. Sorrowful and beautiful.
