Sorry for missing last week’s post. There wasn’t much in they way of new stuff so again you’re getting a post of two combined weeks. This past week was fucking killer though. The rest of September looks to take it’s toll on my wallet and time as a good majority of my anticipated albums from the year are about to be flung in to the world. Good. The more killer metal the better. So enough bullshitting, here’s what’s been killer the past two weeks.
NEW STUFF: (Click them titles, bonehead)
Medevil – Conductor of Storms
Fuck yes, this was all kinds of awesome. This band looks like a bunch of kids but they’re just exploding with a classic heavy metal style. Singer sounds like the love child of Udo and Dio. The thing is, it doesn’t even sound like a throwback band, like so many classic metal bands today. It’s like a current version of the style. It’s hard to put in to words but man, this thing fucking kills.
Mesarthim – .- -… … . -. -.-. .
Hot off the heels of their EPs Pillars and Spire, Mesarthim released their new full-length with it’s ridiculous morse code title, which translates into Absence. Yes I did a morse code translator. Despite that, this is another killer release from the band. Swirling atmospherics, uplifting electronics mixed with the black metal. It’s highly engaging and well, happy sounding. It would be dsbm if it weren’t for it’s warmth and devotion to the cosmos, which is different for all the black metal bands who tackle the same subject.
Devin Townsend Project – Transcendence
I’m not going to try and describe this album. It’s Devin Townsend. It’s in the same vein as the last couple albums. It’s beautifully amazing, awe-inspiring, creative music. Anything he puts out I’ll put my ear to.
Evergrey – The Storm Within
Some solid, fun, progressive tinged power metal. Like a less progressive Symphony X with some more of that “symphonic” sound, subtly but the lead singer of Nightwish appears on two songs if that tells you anything. Like I said, solid fun.
Vader – Iron Times EP
This is supposed to serve as an appetizer for their new full-length out in November, and who are we fooling? I was gonna get that album no matter what. Vader is the ultimate comfort death metal food. That being said, the direction they’ve taken on this EP and the last covers album they did, puts the band more firmly in a thrash zone, which, I fucking dig. Thrash through Vader’s filter sounds good to me. Also, the Motorhead cover on here is solid. Vader always handles covers well.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Skeleton Tree
Again, there’s no real reason to explain Nick Cave. He’s been doing his mournful singer/songwriter thing for decades and he’s amazing at it. This one is back to the darker side of things having recently lost his son it makes sense it would be reflected in his music. If you like Nick Cave this’ll be what you want from him.
Mare Cognitum – Luminiferous Aether
As soon as I heard there was going to be a new album form this band I had no doubts it would be amazing. Considering that Mare Cognitum released a split with Aureole only a month ago and the Mare Cognitum side of that was fucking mind blowing, I knew this one was going to be a bonafide masterpiece, and guess fucking what? It sure as shit is. Insanely melodic and riffy cosmic oriented, atmospheric black metal is what Mare Cognitum does, and holy fuck does he do it to perfection on this one. End of the year contender, no fucking doubt.
