I’ve been enthralled with Virus’ new album Memento Collider this year but it occurred to me I hadn’t heard any of their previous albums, which as you’ll see and hear, seemed absolutely crazy to me.

Based solely on the fact that main member Czral claims Virus is musically linked to one of his other bands Ved Buens Ende (which are fucking amazing and should be your favorite band), Virus should be taking up space in my collection. Let’s also not forget Czral is also involved in Aura Noir and was also in Cadaver Inc, Dodheimsgard, Satyricon, Ulver, and Dimmu Borgir. Quite the fucking line up. His bandmates are no slouches either having shared time in Ved Buens Ende as well.

Now what does all this create in Virus? Weird, brilliant, creative, avant-garde, rock/metal. To be honest, I’m having a hard time describing the album as a lot of the sounds and structure are far outside my musical wheelhouse. I’ve seen reviews comparing it to jazz in structure. It’s definitely doing some unique and interesting things. The closet thing I can think of to relate it to is the Killing Jokes odder moments? But even then it’s not really a fair comparison. It’s truly a unique album. Don’t let my lack of verbal explanation stop you from hearing this or make you believe this is all just weird arthouse noise. It’s challenging to be sure, but most great art is. I think it’s a fucking triumph.
