It’s been a little slow on the new release front these past couple week’s. That’s fine with me. I can use a break from the constant barrage, especially given how the rest of August and the fall are looking to shape up for new material. I spent most of the past couple weeks stuck on some newer stuff, exploring older stuff and finding some new gems. Metal is the gift that keeps on giving.

NEW STUFF: (Click the titles, jerks)

Panopticon – On the Subject of Mortality & Social Disservices (Revisions of the Past)
Man, I fucking love Panipticon. I’m not sure there’s anything that man has done that isn’t amazing. That being said, I’ve kind of neglected these albums in favor of Kentucky, Roads to the North, and Autumn Eternal. Not that they’re bad albums, far from it, but the sound and emotion from those three are just unapproachable. To be fair, they are my favorite albums of all time and it’s hard to compare. However, these new reworked, remastered versions take these older albums to new places and breath new life into them. Again, not that that needed it but sometimes you see, or in this case, hear new things through a different set of ears and man, these are fucking phenomenal. Adjusted enough to sound almost like new recordings while letting the older versions still retain their charm, these albums don’t replace the older versions, more so compliment them whereas now instead of overwriting the old ones, it’s like we have two more amazing Panopticon albums. Fucking amazing.

Al’Tyr – Let the Lords of Chaos Reign
Highly symphonic and melodic, one-man black metal band from Australia. Reminds me of Bal-Sagoth in spots. Mostly the melody and high guitar riffs. Overall, pretty fucking killer. Love me some overly symphonic black metal.

Cody Jinks – I’m not the Devil
Great outlaw country. Straight up. Great songs, great voice, great music.

Mare Cognitum/Aueole – Resonance: Crimson Void
I was just listening to the track premiere from Mare Cognitum’s newest album due out in September when my buddy sent me a link to this split of theirs with Aureole. Anything Mare Congitum puts out will go in my ears so I jumped on this one (which is pay what you want on Bandcamp) and sure enough, Mare Cognitum’s tracks fucking kill. All they’re hyper melodic, atmospheric, progressive black metal mastery is on full display and with only two songs of their’s on the split, really shows the breadth of the bands sound. Fucking amazing.

Aureole I wasn’t familiar with going in and my immediate reaction is that it sounded like some of that space black metal that bands like Darkspace and Alrakis do so well (for the most part). Highly ambient, synthesized, with wide open soundscapes and desolate distant vocals. The first song really picks up near the end with some killer repetitious riffing before plunging in a highly melodic and furious second song. It’s not bad and I can see why they’re on a split with Mare Cognitum as it’s a good compliment to their fuller more progressive song. Killer split all around.

Mizmor – Yodh
Fucking crushing, dismal, foreboding, imposing, black/doom/drone metal from sole member A.L.N., who does live duty for the band Hell, so if you’re familiar with Hell, you have somewhat of an idea what’s going on with Yodh. This shit is fucking crushingly heavy. Unrelentingly so and after an hour of this it’s a bit draining. Not in a bad way, just is a “holy fuck” what happened sort of way. Check this shit out.

Spirit Adrift – Chained to Oblivion
Classically informed doom in a similar vein to the almighty Yob, Magic Circle, or other such heavy, introspective doom bands. What stuck out to me the most was how many riffs are on this thing. He (this is a one man doom band) rarely recycles anything and it makes the whole thing wildly dynamic. I’m sure there will be the inevitable Pallbearer comparisons, but fuck that noise. This is better. Also, that fucking killer Nate Burns album art.
