Mekong Delta is like a buffet of band members from other (mostly German) power metal and thrash bands. Helloween, Luca Turilli’s Rhapsody, Stratovarius, At Vance, and Annihilator have all donated members to Mekong but I’m interested in one particular member who only appeared on this album. If you can remember all the way back to yesterday I shared Mutant’s fucking riff monster masterpiece The Aeonic Majesty. Well, their guitar player takes the lead on Lurking Fear.

Now considering all the members that have come and gone from Mekong and where they’ve come from you’d expect a power metal album. To be sure, there are strong power metal overtones, but it’s more centered on a technical, progressive thrash vibe. Not surprisingly, it’s melodic and catchy as fuck, full of power and crushing riffs. It’s aggressive in ways most power metal bands aren’t and I’m sure that’s a result of the influences and members plus the unrelenting technicality. It’s just a bludgeoner all the way threw. Love the bite, love the riffs, love the whole damn thing.
