This one was a blind listen. My buddy Ben shared it with me and I saw from the track listing that they do a Lunar Aurora cover and that immediately peaked my interest. Given that they cover Lunar Aurora perhaps it’s not completely a blind listen as that might have been a giveaway as to the type of music Gratzug plays. It was.

Gratzug is a one man black metal band from Germany. As I had guessed, they play black metal similar in spirit to the amazing Lunar Aurora, meaning, it’s highly atmospheric with insanely melodic, pummeling, and beautiful guitars. It has a bit of a “trapped in the vacuum of space” quality to it, particularly in the cold and distant vocals which work perfectly with the stunningly beautiful music. I’ve heard this kind of black metal referred to as “music to stare at the stars with” and I think that’s a very apt description.
