Both of these bands both blew right by me in 2015 and now, all of a sudden, the keep seeming to pop up in videos I’ve been watching or articles I’ve been reading so it’s time I gave them both a shot. They aren’t related in any capacity, at least not that I’m aware of, except they’re both black metal bands.

First up is Cosmic Church. This is a long running, one-man, Finnish black metal band with two albums under his belt and a shit ton of ep’s/demos. The music is icy, melodic, atmospheric black metal with a bite. It’s not overly atmospheric, which allows for the ferocity and melody to take center stage. I also have to comment on the imagery. Main man Luxixul Sumering Auter graces this cover, replete in a red robe, strikingly set apart from the lush, green, forested environment he’s lost in. It’s a simple idea but makes for a unique cover and probably gives you an idea of the ethereal quality and focus of the music. Killer fucking EP.

Next up is Abominor from the ever prolific and in-vogue Iceland. The Icelandic scene seems rather incestuous so I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the band members, if not all, are pulling double or triple duty in other bands as well. Abominor is a bass heavy, desolate, swirling, sonic experience closer to experimental death metal. There’s a lot of texturing and layering going on here to accomplish their dissonance and it’s a pummeling experience to be sure. Iceland continues to produce quality metal as if the country was made just for that.

So there you have it. A double dose of black metal EP’s to set your head a spinning.
