October seems to be whipping right by. Take your time, month! Anyway, the weather here took a drastic turn from a bit cooler to downright rain and cold and I couldn’t be happier. Perfect metal listening weather. Speaking of that, there where a bunch of new releases this week, mostly on the ok side but there were a couple of bright spots and one gem in the rough so let’s get to it.

NEW STUFF (Links in titles)

Enshine – Singularity
Like a doomier version of Insomnium. You know the style: Sweeping, majestic soundscapes of melancholic beauty with guttural vocals. Nothing new here but a nice listen.

Vhol – Deeper Than Sky
Another of my highly anticipated albums for the year. What happens when you combine members of Ludicra, Hammers of Misfortune, Agalloch, and YOB? You get Vhol’s instantly infectious progressive take on thrash with a little bit of a crust/punk coating. This one is more direct and thrashy in the places where the last album was a bit ponderous and indulgent, which makes for a better album.

Kauan – Sorni Nai
This is a new discovery for me. I thought I was in for some atmospheric black metal but what I found was more a doom ladened, post rock album. There’s some black metal stylings to be sure and it’s not 100% doom. It is, however, quite captivating and beautiful.

Selvans – Lupercalia
Highly orchestrated and atmospheric black metal that doesn’t manage to go over board on those elements yet keep things interesting and crushing. This was a nice surprise and a killer fucking album. NOTE: This has been on constant playback this week. It’s really grown on me and may be a contender for the best of list.

Chuck Ragan –  Folkadelphia Session 12/04/14
Nothing new here really, just a newly released acoustic session that is free of charge. Chuck Ragan is awesome and free music is awesome.

Varathron – The Confessional of the Black Penitents EP
I was fairly taken with their last full-length so news of a new EP from this classic band was a welcomed treat. It’s Varathron doing what they do best which is nasty Greek styled black metal. I didn’t listen to the live tracks on the EP but the three new tracks are killer.

Terzij de Horde – Self
Blistering post heavy black metal. Some times are more on the post side, some are more on the black metal side. Nothing spectacular here but an ok listen.
