I forget if Misery’s Omen was a recommendation or something I dug up while perusing the interwebs but however they came into my life, I’m grateful.

If you haven’t been paying attention, Australia has a fucking crushing extreme metal scene so many top quality bands it’s hard to keep track of them all. For example, Portal are from Australia. Yeah. A lot of the members from various Australian bands play in numerous bands and help to keep spreading the awesome metal around and the styles of these bands vary.  Cauldron Black Ram, Sacriphyx, Mournful Congregation, and StarGazer represent some of the best of black metal, thrash, death, doom/funeral doom, and avant-garde metal the country has to offer. Those bands also offer some of their members in the form of Misery’s Omen.

Off the cuff, Misery’s Omen might sound like a doom metal band, and there’s some of that in there, but with so many members from so many genres of metal that’s not all you’re going to get.

The music is an otherworldly experience, masterfully blending the best of all these bands, styles and playing to create something unique and hammering. It’s as beautiful as it is chaotic. It’s focus is a mainly a heavy, plodding doom with bizarre time changes to keep you on your toes and amplify the strange or surreal atmosphere but it spins into moments of sheer melancholic beauty, then right back again. It’s a treat for the senses and one that needs to be filling your ears right now.
