The Skaden is the one man project from prolific Frenchman Stefan Kozak and by looking at the title you can probably guess it’s not the cheeriest of black metal albums. True to French black metal form, the album is a melting pot of non-traditional, experimental sounds that not only help create this bleak sound, but lend to making this one of the more beautiful albums I’ve ever heard. It seems suiting he referred to it as “Romantic Black Metal.”

Like the best of black metal the album is full of unique, creative and innovative sounds and melodies and while I don’t really see a similarity sound wise, you could compare the music to Peste Noir or Alcest in it’s approach.

The utter despair and overall tribute to death is probably suiting as this was Stefan’s final album as he died very recently in August of this year.
