This week was like being bludgeoned over and over again, but with awesome new metal. Sonic assaults are my preferred method of beatings. Not much to say really except strap yourself in, this week was a fucking doozy.

NEW STUFF: (Links in titles)

Luctus – Ryšys
This band is new to me. Lithuanian black metal with a helping of black thrash elements make for a solid, fun listen.

Mgla – Exercise in Futility
God damn was I anticipating this album. Since their last album, Mgla has been one of my favorite black metal bands and the promise of new material has been almost to much to handle. This new album is not a letdown. They continue their dismal, hate-filled approach to black metal straddling both older aesthetics with modern sensibility and make for an album that I would be surprised if it doesn’t make my best of list. All hail, Mgla!

Moon – Render of the Veils
I’m not sure who this ended up on my list of bands to check out but I must have heard it somewhere as this is my first listen to this band. Super etherial black metal, with vast soundscapes of sound and atmosphere. This album would have benefited from some editing to get the run time down as it’s quite long but there’s some good moments lost in there.

Speedtrap – Straight Shooter
Just some plain ol’ furiously fun speed metal. Heavily steeped in 80’s nostalgia with bit of classic rock and some Manowar-esque epic metal thrown in for good fun.

Vials of Wrath – Days Without Names
Beautiful, atmospheric, black/dark metal. Some wonderful acoustic passages, sweeping soundscapes and well crafted songs. Another solid example of a band not redefining the genre but excelling at all the things that make it great.

Stratovarius – Eternal
Just what the doctor ordered: Euro cheese-tastic power metal! Few other bands can quite bring the over the top, cheesiness like Stratovarius. Another solid drop in the power metal bucket for the year.

Orkan – Livlaus
Norwegian blackened thrash. Seems like the band Taake draws members from for his live performance. Pretty fun, if albeit kind of average.

Grift – Syner
I feel like this one has been a long time coming. Could be that Nordvis as been advertising it like crazy for months, and with due cause. This album is fucking awesome. Dismal, melancholic, atmospheric black metal done extremely well. I also highly enjoy that Metal-Archives labels the bands lyrical themes as “man’s insignificance.” Awesome.

Hercyn – Dust and Ages
A quick, engaging, tranquil, yet beautiful little atmospheric black metal album.

Other Jams:

Nechochwen – Heart of Akamon
Horrendous – Anareta
Afflicted – Prodigal Sun
Luca Turilli – Prophet of the Last Eclipse
Mare Cognitum – An Extraconscious Lucidity
Inaeris – Inaeris

Until Next Time…
