Holy shit, it’s September. While I’m typing this it is Force Friday, the release of all the new Star Wars merchandise pertaining to the new movie. Star Wars is not an association I make with fall. Metal is. So is horror. I’m happy to add Star Wars into the mix this time around. What? It’s not Fall yet? Close e-fucking-nough.

Speaking of metal, this week hit fucking hard with new albums. Great week for new metal.

NEW STUFF: (Links in the titles)

Majestic Downfall – …When Dead
Grabbed this based on all the love No Clean Singing was giving it. Pretty infectious death/doom. Reminds me a bit a mid career Sentenced, but heavier and less goth focus. Solid album.

WitchSorrow – No Light, Only Fire
A good mix of a lot of classic doom bands with some modern doom sensibilities. Like a best of doom album but from one band.

Amorphis – Under the Red Cloud
I always give new Amorphis albums a shot even though I think they’ve been on autopilot for the past couple albums. Skyforger was a hell of an album but all the subsequent albums have been sort of tepid to me.  However, this new one is more in line with Skyforger albeit with less of the epic sense that album had. While I could do without the silly flute parts, it’s the most enjoyable Amorphis album, for me, since Skyforger.

Iron Maiden – The Book of Souls
Well, it’s Iron Maiden. On the surface it’s Iron Maiden doing their thing. Solid riffs, good melodies, catchy choruses. Is it a classic? No, but if you dig a bit deeper it’s probably the best they’ve been since Brave New World.

Nightfell – Darkness Evermore
I thought this bands debut album last year was a crusher but this one blows that one out of the water. Full on, next level expansion on their death/black metal sound. Fucking killer.

Chaos Frame – Paths to Exile
With most of Noble Beast making up this band how could I not give this a shot. While it’s no Noble Beast it does have legs of its own. It’s more on the progressive side of power metal and less straight forward than Noble Beast is. The guitar work is of course stellar and this is a good head banger of an album. Solid.

Horrendous – Anareta
Horrendous sure isn’t wasting time. Barely a year since their last, and awesome, release they’re back with this new slab of death metal. If you’re a fan of their previous album, this one should be a no brainer. It continues their transition from Swedish death metal homage to the more progressive and “post” death metal they exhibited on the last release. Killer band.

Black Majesty – Cross of Thorns
I’ve been really impressed with power metal’s output this year. While there hasn’t been any groundbreaking albums yet, the bands have been putting out excellently solid and fun albums, which is mostly all I want from power metal. Black Majesty stumbled on their last release but are back to their, ahem, majesty on this one.

Nechochwen – Heart of Akamon
Can Bindrune do no wrong? They’re primed for another incredible year and this albums is yet another in their already stellar catalog. Nechochwen fit right in with the labels black metal, folk infused sound and crush this album. Amazing. Get it.

Dreadnought – Bridging Realms
Khemmis – Absolution
Black Tower – The Secret Fire
Hinsidig – I en Tidløs Høst
Kriegsmaschine – Enemy of Man
Kriegsmaschine – A Thousand Voices
Fiendlord – Dust on the Chamber Floor
Lluvua – Eternidad Solemme
Inferno – Omniabsence Filled By His Greatness
Adversarial – Death, Endless Nothing and the Black Knife of Nihilism
Bolt Thrower – The IVth Crusade
Mournful Congregation – The Monad of Creation
Kriegsmaschine – Altered States of Divinity
Bolt Thrower – War Master
Eoront – Neverending Journey

Until Next Time…
