We’re only half way through August but I’m already aching for Fall’s impending arrival. It’s always my favorite time of year and particularly this year, there are some incredible albums coming out I can’t wait to get my hands on. August is shaping up to be no slouch. The rest of August is promising some great releases as well. Here’s to this week’s!

NEW STUFF: (Click the titles for links)

Hate Eternal – Infernus
Hate Eternal is one of those bands I’ve heard of for years but never really listened to. I figured with their new album coming out I would give them a shot. This is some pretty rad, standard death metal with a ton of technicality but not the “show-off” noodling kind. Pretty fun, nothing exceptional. I was talking with my bud and he said their debut album is by far the best. I’ll have to get into that.

One Master – Reclusive Blasphemy
Rip roaring, occult oriented, Bostonian black metal. Sheer fury and force. Dug this album.

Kêres – Battle Secrets
One man black metal project from Atvar, the main man behind Cirle of Ouroborus, a band I recently became familiar with. This is more straightforward Finnish black metal than Ouroborus although not without some more orchestral and theatrical parts. For the most part it’s fairly punishing, mid paced black metal that is well crafted and executed.

Adversarial – Death, Endless Nothing and the Black Knife of Nihilism
Some nasty, furious, dismal blackened death metal. Good for what ails you.

Sunset in the 12th House – Mozaic
Of all the sub sub sub sub genres of metal, one of them I’ve never really bean able to get into is the instrumental metal, or “instrumetal” (a term I can’t stand). However, when Sunset was suggested to me I saw the pedigree of the members and seeing that the band consists of players from Dordeduh, Ephel Duath (whose last album was fucking amazing) and Negura Bunget I thought I should give this a shot. It’s pretty rad. The instrumentation is fairly psychedelic as much as it is heavy and they manage to merge some Romanian folky jams into it, which isn’t surprising considering the members involved. Overall, this is some awesome, vocal-less music. To be fair though, the last song has vocals.

Weird Fate – Cycle of Naught
This is a doozy of a black metal album I nearly passed on. I have their previous album but couldn’t really remember much about it so I figured I’d let this new one go. Good thing my buddy reminded me about it. Insane, swirling, German black metal. A bit atmospheric in parts, a bit progressive in parts but moody through and through.

Myrkur – M
If you’re not familiar with Myrkur and the weird cover up, sensationalized story of her and her black metal project, I won’t bore you with all the details. Suffice to say she’s back with a new album, this tone produced by Garm of the legendary Ulver and features various musicians from the black/death metal elite. I thought her previous EP was ok with some pretty “blackened” songs. I find her new one to be more of the same but the thing I can’t shake about her music is I feel the whole thing is fairly inauthentic. Like she’s dressing up as black metal for Halloween. I think more female voices in black metal is a good thing but over all I don’t think this is the answer.

Anopheli – The Ache of Want
Nervosa – Victim of Yourself
