May just rolled over me like a fucking semi truck, leaving me splattered along the road like so many others to slow to get out of times way. Hopefully June will be a little more laid back. At least there’s a never ending supply of metal to help with frantic state this month has left me in. I couldn’t get to an update last week so this week’s list is a combination of last week and this week. It’s been an impressive couple of weeks on the metal front so now you have to excuse not to get caught up.

The New Stuff:

Ethereal Shroud – They Became the Falling Ash
Bleak, miserable, harmonious, beautiful raw atmospheric black/doom metal. Filling in a bit of the hole Wolves in the Throne Room has left.

Kres – Na Krawędziach Nocy
Some awesome Polish atmospheric/depressive black metal. From some of the members of the equally as awesome band Fall and one member from the incredible Wedrujacy Wiatr.

Sale Freux – Crèvecoeur
French black metal with all the weirdness and eccentricities they are known for. Weird mashups of sound, instruments and vocals with some killer black metal. Not a casual listening album for sure.

Endlichkeit – IX
Just one song, but an awesome addition to the three previous volumes of raw, beautiful black metal.

Encyrcle -Encyrcle
Classic speed metal, infused with some NWOBHM charm, a little bit of theatrics and and whole mess of fun.

Vattnet Viskar – Settler
I kind of consider Vattnet Viskar the good version of Deafheaven. Both bands are heavily aligned with this “post” black metal label and while I think Deafheaven is riding a trending wave, stealing from better musicians without understanding what it is,  Vattnet Viskar is doing their own thing with the post genre. This album is awesomely beautiful and full on atmospheric post whatever. The cover is fucking terrible but don’t let that fool you.

Distant Sun – Dark Matter
A fun power metal/thrash mash up band from Russia. Sci-Fi oriented themes and killer riffs.

Lucifer – Lucifer I
There’s been a lot of hype surrounding this band. Mostly because it consists of one of the members from the short lived but much praised The Oath. In order to cement their “supergroup” status they also have former members of the legendary Cathedral. Like a lot of over hyped things, it doesn’t live up to it. It’s a decent album, vocalist Johanna Sadonis has a killer voice and there’s some good grooves on it but Royal Thunder and Ruby the Hatchet have already killed this genre of bluesy based hard/doom rock this year that everything else seems sort of tame in comparison.

Whitey Morgan and the 78’s – Sonic Ranch
Can we get some country music up in here? How about Whitey Morgan and the 78’s? Classic, outlaw, down and dirty country music. There’s a tremendous cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Waiting’ ‘Round to Die” on here as well.

Amestigon – Thier
I just got into Amestigon through a buddies recommendation so seeing that they had a new album coming out instantly caught my eye and oh man, is it incredible. It amazes me that members of Abigor and Summoning can make such an American sounding black metal album and manage to sound nothing like their respective bands. This album is a powerhouse of atmospheric black metal, destined to be a classic.

Vorum – Current Mouth
I was a fan of their previous, dirty, furious take on death metal. They seem to be veering a bit towards black metal on this one, but still keeping their boots in that lo fi, death metal realm. A good little EP. Solid for getting the head banging.

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within
I’ll always check out what Paradise Lost is offering. They’re usually solid, if not a little repetitive, but they manage to keep things at least interesting and fun. Well, fun is probably not what they’re going for, but this album finds them sort of throwing their various sounds from the years in a blender. It’s got the doom stuff, the goth stuff, the orchestration, the heavier, faster stuff. It’s like a best of Paradise Lost without being a crappy best of album. Still digging this band.

Isvind – Gud
Solid, Norwegian black metal. Dabbling a little in the past, a little in the present, this album has some killer songs, both melodic and melancholic, surrounded by an every dominant black metal fury attack.

Circle of Ouroborus – Alttarimyllyt
This is my first time listening to this band. I’d heard good things before and figured since they have a new album, now is the time to try it out. Come to find out they have quite the extensive back catalog so I may have to do some digging with this band because this album is fairly awesome. The core of it is Finnish black metal, but it’s really all over the place, experimentally. Weird, intricate song structures. Slower, intimate acoustic songs. Shredding black metal. It’s a treat for the ears.

My Other Jams:

Abyss – Heretical Anatomy
Falconer – Falconer
Obsequiae – Aria of Vernal Tombs
Entrails – Obliteration
Astriaal – Renascent Misanthropy
Misþyrming – Söngvar elds og óreiðu
Forbidden – Forbidden Evil
Arcturus – The Arcturian Sign
Membaris – Grenzgänger
Borknagar – Borknagar
Borknagar – The Archaic Course

Until Next Time…
