Wow, its been a minute since I’ve gotten to do this. I’m sure you’re all going stir crazy without my obscure metal ramblings. So let’s get back to it!
Membaris call Germany their home and have been together since 1999. The bass player and vocalist shares time in another awesome German black metal band, Weird Fate. It’s been a while since I listened to Weird Fate so I’m not sure if I can comment on whether they tread similar ground our not. Anyway, I’ve given it away already but Membaris are a black metal band. Given the name and album artwork for Grenzgänger I was expecting an atmospheric black metal album. While there is certainly a level of that, it’s not as in your face as say fellow country men Lunar Aurora. Instead the band uses it as a garnish on top of their melodic black metal compositions. This is another fine example of the beauty certain black metal can achieve that I keep bringing up. There are some incredibly fast and pummeling songs/moments on the album but the truly impressive parts are when the melodic, atmospheric and pummeling all converge at once. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s so well performed it doesn’t even matter.
The Conspiracy split is between them and the previously mentioned Weird Fate. Makes sense, however I don’t have the Weird Fate side so I can’t comment on their side. Having said that, this could be an awesome little EP just from the Membaris side. The atmospherics are a bit heavier on this one but all the aforementioned qualities are still there.
This was a pretty rad introduction to Membaris and a quality recommendation. This might be for fans of black metal already, but you should give it a shot anyway. It never hurts to try something new.
