I imagine Hungry is a cold and desolate place. It could very well not be but after listening to black metal musician Winter’s solo band Forest Silence and his lone full-length album Philosphy of Winter, I’m inclined to believe it’s nothing but snow-swept, frozen mountains and black, icy forests. This imagery is not alien to black metal but Forest Silence does such an incredible, and beautiful job, of making you feel it. The ambient sounds and atmospherics are used so brilliantly on this album. They complement and invoke mood, as opposed to being shoved in your face. The slow paced black metal also helps. Winter struck gold frozen gold with this album, which is not surprising given the quality of one of his other bands, Nefarious (who deserve a review on here as well). So get cold and miserable and listen to this album. You’ll be glad you did.
