I’m going to try something new today. Here’s a practically brand spanking new album that I’ve been enjoying the hell out of recently.
From what I gather, Downfall of Nur is the product of one Argentinian man. This is his first full length release. Argentina doesn’t come up very often when talking about extreme metal, but it looks as though Downfall wants to change that. This is extremely well played, composed and written atmospheric black metal. While I use the term “atmospheric” a lot, and it is appropriate here, there’s more going on with this album. For one, there is a folk-ish sound on select tracts, some dismal doom elements and some borderline depressive black metal sounds, coupled with nice ambient surroundings. It’s a dark and haunting album to be sure and I’ve read comparisons to bands like Drudkh, Kroda, and Paysage d’Hiver (though not nearly as raw as Paysage d’Hiver) and I can hear elements of all those bands in Downfall. Maybe because they all focus on similar seems but comparing any of those bands to each other doesn’t seem right to me.
This album is excellent. I see this contending for a year end spot.
