Part of the illustrious “Peaceville Three” along with Anathema and Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride helped to usher in the doom/death metal sound. My Dying Bride seem to lean heavier on the death metal side with a nice touch of goth ennui. This album in particular. While I’ve been a fan of this band for awhile I haven’t fully explored their catalog but I’m a bit of a mark for that British “gothed up” doom. Katatonia being another band that fits that bill. My Dying Bride have always seemed the darker of the 4 bands and this album is a bleak, depressing romp through their sound. Full or synthesizers, dark, broody riffs and even some excellent keyboard parts by Jonny Maulding of Bal-Sagoth (check that band out pronto) this album to be is typical of My Dying Bride. I have yet to stumble across an album by this band I have not like.
