This is my first encounter with the “epic” doom band Solstice. Epic is a fairly apt description for this band as they focus on English folklore, mythology, Lovecraftian horrors, and warriors honor. If I heard just those descriptors I would assume this might be a power metal band, and they are only a hair away from it. It’s doom like Candlemass is doom, on the more aggressive side but I think Solstice is more aggressive. Atlantean Kodex springs to mind while listening to this album, but they have less of the viking era Bathory in them. Solstice is indeed epic metal. It’s fist raising, sword swinging, screaming from the top of a castle amidst a fog covered battle. It’s awesome. Epic is right.
